Lahore From Crest to Calamity
A Study on the Interplay of Religious Demography and Politics, 1881-2011
This is a pioneering effort by mostly younger scholars to re-examine certain historical forces at work in an area which had been a part of undivided India since time immemorial but broke off later because of various factors at play. This work seeks to show how societies fall victim to demographic transformation and the role religion plays in giving a certain complexion and orientation to a society. Lahore From Crest to Calamity
Institutional arrangements, societal norms, political behavior and cultural-educational scenarios are nurtured on multiple factors as we find in a plural society such as Lahore. As long as the balance in society prevails, and some sort of fair play is at work even in a “colonial situation” things go on. Once the primordial loyalties emerge triumphant, the demographic factor turns decisive. Consequently, it degenerates into a tragic story of all-around decline and despondency that leaves its victims devastated, traumatized and homeless. Forced migration is an essential part of this tragic tale.
The purpose of this project is to highlight the need for an objective history and a scientific approach that takes care to delineate the fault-lines of a society, so that people learn a lesson! It offers a spectacle of a society that has experienced socio-cultural achievements, freedom movement as also the unhindered progress of communal separatism leading to bloodshed and refugee movements on an unprecedented scale and much more. In writing this, we believe that truth can not be suppressed for any ideological and political purposes. In an ideal situation there should not be injustice, hatred and intolerance.
